Have a think about the sort of things you are going to tow.
Make sure you know exactly what kind of caravan, caravan or other tools you want to pull. Your choice of towbar will depend on the size and weight of the load.
Also find out how much your car can actually pull. You can usually find this information in the owner’s manual for your car or by calling the maker. Otherwise we are able to find this out for you.
There are 4 types of towbars that our local tow bar fitters install.
These are fixed, removable, and retractable which comes as a swan neck or flange.
Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. We will take time and talk these through with you so you choose the one that best suits your needs and likes.
Detachable towbars can be removed when not in use, however fixed towbars remain on your vehicle permanently. Retractable towbars are available with a swan neck or a flange to meet a variety of pulling needs.
Each of these will also have a price difference which again we caan go through with you.
Detachable Flange Towbars
Detachable Flange Towbars are helpful since they are easily removed when not in use. This is very handy for folks who don’t want a towbar to be visible all the time. They are an excellent choice for a variety of pulling applications due to their versatility and ease of usage. Towing, however, requires that the towbar be correctly installed and maintained in order to be safe and efficient.
Detachable Swan Neck Towbars
Detachable Swan Neck Towbars are popular among individuals who appreciate the beauty of the swan neck design but want the option to remove the towbar when not in use. They are an excellent answer for a variety of tugging scenarios because to their elegance and ease of use. Towing, however, requires that the towbar be correctly installed and maintained in order to be safe and efficient.
Fixed flange towbars
Fixed flange towbars are strong and durable, making them suitable for heavy-duty pulling. They are typically the best fit for commercial and industrial applications. However, some customers may dislike the visible flange plate since it interferes with the appearance of the automobile when the towbar is not in use.
Swan Neck Towbars
Swan Neck Towbars are popular because they are elegant and easy to use. It is important to remember, however, that because of the way they are built, they may not function with all automobiles.
STEP 2
Types of Electrics
Once you have the right towbar then next step to decide which type of towing electrics you will need.
Our Local Tow Bar fitters will explain about the 3 types of towing electric socket used in the UK. These are Single 7 Pin electrics (12N), Twin 7 Pin electrics (12N & 12S) and Single 13 Pin electrics.
The type of socket that you need depends on what you are towing.
Whether you will be towing a caravan, a trailer or cycle carrier you will need some electrics fitted with your towbar.
STEP 3
Choose wiring options
Choose between universal or dedicated tow bar wiring options.
There are two ways to wire a tow bar.
On older vehicles, you can install both universal aftermarket wire and dedicated particular wiring, however some later vehicles only allow dedicated specific wiring to be installed.
Although universal wiring is typically less expensive, it is not always the best option. For example, universal wiring may not activate built-in safety mechanisms. All future new cars will require dedicated, specific wiring.
